Montgomery tubercles also called Areolar glands are Nature’s breastfeeding ointment. These slightly bumpy parts on the areola may become noticeable during pregnancy. The size and amount of Montgomery tubercles a lactating person may have vary, about 2 - 28 per nipple. They produce an oil that lubricates which can help prevent chafing. The antibacterial properties help keep germs away from the breasts.
